Better posture does not come about by accident. Yet many of us grew up being told to “stand up straight”, which sounds literally and figuratively very rigid! In the realm of yoga, we take a different approach… one I believe will resonate with many of you.
Instead of saying “Stand up straight”, yogis say:
“Stand tall.”
This might seem like a subtle shift in language, but it is significant. In yoga philosophy, standing tall goes beyond physical alignment to encompass a sense of inner strength, grace and mindful awareness.
Here’s what I mean…
Embodied Confidence and Inner Strength
Standing tall is about more than just aligning the body in a linear way. It is about the balance of upright posture and being grounded.
This encourages a sense of confidence and inner strength which you (and others) can’t help but notice.
Creating Space for Breath and Energy Flow
😊 My personal favourite
Yoga emphasises our breath as our life force, our vital energy, or prana, (Qi in Chinese medicine). When we stand tall, we naturally create space for our breath to flow freely. By elongating the spine and lifting the chest, we expand lung capacity, allowing for deep, nourishing breaths. This enhanced breath awareness fosters a state of calmness, clarity and vitality.
Cultivating Mindful Awareness
Standing tall in yoga invites us to be fully present and aware of our bodies. It encourages us to tune into our posture, alignment and the subtle sensations within us.
This helps us notice areas of tension or imbalance and work towards releasing them.
Integrating Physical Alignment with Inner Alignment
Standing up straight emphasises external alignment.
Conversely, standing tall emphasises physical AND inner alignment.
Standing tall aligns our physical structure, promoting optimal joint function, balance, and stability, while simultaneously aligning our inner being, harmonising our thoughts, emotions and energy, creating a sense of overall wellbeing.
Self-Acceptance and Authenticity
Yoga encourages us to embrace our unique selves. Rather than striving for what better posture should be, standing tall invites us to honour our individual bodies and their natural alignment. It recognises that each person’s journey is different, and that true alignment is found when we accept and express our authentic selves.
The lens of yoga is a beautiful way through which to navigate our journey of self-discovery and wellbeing… would you agree?
