In short, yes! But before you call your plan manager, here are some key things to keep in mind.
Where does yoga fit in my NDIS plan?
Yoga generally falls under social and community participation in your NDIS plan.
It’s important to note that this doesn’t mean you have to join a group or public class if you’d prefer something private.
According to the NDIS website*, social and community participation is defined as “meeting people with similar interests and joining in social and community activities… going where others go, doing what others do, with other people and choosing activities you enjoy… [it] also means different things to different people. It can include going to your local cafe, joining a netball team, bushwalking with a friend, doing a craft class, getting work experience, or volunteering.”
In this context, yoga sessions can be given as part of a group, or one to one.
Group classes can be fun! But it can be hard to find a group class that fits your personal needs. In this case, private sessions are ideal, and can be delivered in a comfortable, calm and supportive environment.
Your yoga teacher and plan manager will work alongside you to explore the options available and find something you feel good about. It is our job to ensure you feel at ease and find yoga not only helpful, but enjoyable.
Will yoga help me with daily living?
In many cases, yes.
Something as simple as starting your day with some gentle yoga stretches can set a positive tone for the hours ahead.
Whether it’s improving flexibility for easier movement or learning mindful breathing techniques for stress management, yoga empowers you to tackle daily living activities with more confidence.
Have something you’d like to work towards, like feeling calm in public places, keeping your balance or better sleep? It’s important that your NDIS yoga plan feels like it’s YOUR yoga plan, not just a stock standard class. Let your yoga teacher and plan manager know what you want, so that the sessions can be tailored to help you build these capabilities.
As a yoga teacher, it’s my role to ensure that every breath and every movement brings you closer to your goals. Yoga is not a magic bullet, but it really does help.
